Frequently Asked Questions
Inflammation Questions
Silent systemic inflammation is the often hidden symptoms of our biologies ‘emergency services’ alarms going off across the body. While inflammation is important to a healthy and natural immune response, inflammation which persists and goes unchecked can continue to spread throughout the body causing harm.
Inflammation can be caused by a number of internal and external factors including poor diet, physical inactivity, obesity, disturbed sleep, chronic stress, overexertion, poor gut microbiome, smoking, air pollution and more.
No, not all inflammation is bad. In fact, having a healthy inflammatory response is essential to a properly functioning immune system. The issue arises when inflammation persists unchecked and changes from a short-term, healthy inflammatory response to long-term, silent, systemic inflammation.
Acute inflammation is a natural and healthy immune response to damage or infection. For example, you cut your finger and it becomes a bit red, swollen, hot and possibly painful - all signs of an inflammatory response. However, these symptoms fade as the wound heals and your finger returns to normal.
Chronic inflammation is persistent inflammation which does not turn off and can result in further complications and damage. For example, consistent, long-term joint inflammation can continually result in cartilage tissue damage, further driving inflammation in a harmful cycle.
When it comes to inflammation, it is all down to cytokines within our bodies. Cytokines are small proteins involved in cell signalling that turn on and off the inflammatory response, balancing inflammation for a healthy immune system.
Cytokines are small proteins involved in cell signalling; essential to the body's immune response and natural balance. Cytokines are the coordinators of inflammation and our immune system.
Cytokines allow the many different systems within our body to communicate and are essential to its natural balance. Pro-inflammatory cytokines signal to our immune system that there is damage or injury, and should therefore increase blood flow (swelling and redness), directing white blood cells to the location for repair, as well as heat to kill the infection. Anti-inflammatory cytokines decrease the immune response, preventing damage from excessive systemic inflammation.
Inflammation is important as it is our natural immune response. It signals an alarm that something is wrong. When inflammation persists beyond a short-term response, however, it becomes damaging to healthy tissues and cells while reducing the sensitivity to future signals.
Silent systemic inflammation can lead to a harmful cycle once out of hand. Inflammation is our body's ‘alarm signal’ to respond to damage or infection, but if this signal persists without end, the body becomes resistant to the signal while the symptoms of inflammation - swelling, redness, heat and pain will continue resulting in damage which could eventually lead to loss of function.
Inflammation can be found across every system within the body.
- Cardiovascular - myocarditis, pericarditis and endocarditis are inflammatory cardiovascular conditions which can result from cholesterol buildup, infections, stress and lead to further cardiovascular risk.
- Digestive - often referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which is characterised by swelling, pain, diarrhea and bleeding.
- Metabolic - Diabetes, fatty liver disease, fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, inability to sleep, poor sleep, energy crashes.
- Skin - Common inflammatory conditions include eczema and psoriasis resulting in redness, swelling, pain and itching.
- Respiratory - bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tube while pneumonia is acute inflammation of the lung tissue itself. Chronic lung inflammation includes conditions like asthma and COPD.
- Nervous - neuroinflammation is inflammation of the brain or spinal cord, involves glial cells releasing cytokines and inflammatory mediators, which can damage neurons and inhibit function and cause cognitive decline.
- Muscular - Myositis is inflammation of the muscles resulting in muscle pain, weakness and fatigue.
- Skeletal - Osteitis is inflammation of the bone and arthritis resulting in pain, swelling, heat and tenderness.
- Endocrine - endocrine inflammation can arise from autoimmune disorders, infections, or hormonal imbalance like insulin resistance which can lead to further complications like obesity or inflammatory bowel disease.
- Lymphatic - lymphadenitis is inflammation within the lymphnodes which can be caused by bacteria or viral infections and result in swollen, tender nodes, fever, red streaks on the skin.
- Urinary - inflammation of the urinary system, also known as urinary tract infections (UTIs), commonly referred to as cystitis, can be painful with frequent burning urination.
- Reproductive - the most common condition Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) can result in severe pain and infertility, as well as other serious complications.
There are many things we can do to combat inflammation including having a healthy, well balanced diet, keeping physically active, having a quality sleep routine, reducing stress, allowing time for recovery when needed and focusing on healthy digestion and gut microbiome.
Product Specific Questions
The landscape of nutrition has long been changing. We are living longer than ever, with more demanding lives than ever, but our food is not nearly as nutritious as it used to be. Food now is produced for convenience, long journeys and shelf lives, over nutritious value. This can lead to deficiencies within our diet which can further drive inflammation and health complications.
At One was created to offer the highest quality health formulation which actually focuses on inflammation, the root cause of disease, while supporting our natural 24 hour circadian cycle and offering the best dosages and nutrient forms required to reduce inflammation to feel your best everyday.
